After heavy rains caused massive flooding in the Western part of Ukraine. Were flooded about 300 settlements in Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi, Lviv, Ternopil and Transcarpathian regions.

The death toll was three persons in Ivano-Frankivsk region, one was missing. Affected thousands of homes, dozens of villages cut off from the outside world. In the region damaged 429,7 km of roads and 130 bridges. In the affected communities there is no electricity and water supply, according to the website of the President.

According to the State service of Ukraine on emergency situations (SSES) on 25 June in Ivano-Frankivsk region 9157 flooded homes in more than 200 settlements. In Chernivtsi region the water in 36 towns. In Lviv oblast, 12 localities of the impounded 109 homes. In Ternopil region affected three villages in the Transcarpathian region – 11.

The main cause of heavy precipitation leading to floods, experts have called climate change. “The last three years were very dry. Then this year was a dry winter and early spring. And then it so happened that a few days in the Carpathians falls monthly rate of precipitation”, – said the ecologist organization “Danube-Carpathian programme” Anatoly Pavelko in an interview with BBC News.

Agree with him and Yuri Dobrinic, Professor of forest crops and forest plant breeding of the National forestry University.

“The main reason is the huge amount of rain in a very short time, he says. – Now the distribution of precipitation in time has changed dramatically – in fact, the annual rainfall may fall in June, and then have a drought. In recent years, the flooding was not because there was a lot of rain. But the water poured out for two weeks – got a flood”.

According to a leading researcher of the Institute of ecology of the Carpathians National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Oxana Mariskevich, one of the factors of the flood, but not a major, is the state forestry.

“Flood no one could undo, but its effects could be much less. For example, if at least partially fulfilled the state program of flood protection in river basins, adopted since the previous major floods, such as in 2008,” she said.

President Vladimir Zelensky demanded that the government system solve annual flooding in the Western regions of Ukraine. He stated this during a conference call about the consequences of the disaster in the West of the country in which the Prime Minister Denis Shmyhal reported the latest information on emergencies in Ivano-Frankivsk region and noted that the volume of the flood exceeds the scale of 2008.

“We annually spend from 500 to 800 million to eliminate the consequences. And this year is likely to be more than a billion hryvnia. Time to find a systemic solution to strengthen the river banks. To strengthen the banks of the Dniester, Tisza to solve this issue once and for all. You need to develop a big program with the assistance of foreign experience, not annually lose people and money”, – said Vladimir Zelensky.
