Almost 2000 years ago the ancient Roman city of Pompeii was destroyed by volcanic eruption of Vesuvius and was buried under a layer of volcanic ash. Recently in the stables of the Villa of the mysteries, one of the most preserved buildings, the archaeologists found the remains of three horses. This writes the IFL.

One of the horses was pulled – apparently the owner was trying to run away from disaster. It preserved Roman chetyrehrogaja saddle – wooden frame with four bronze “horns”.

This design helped the riders to keep the balance before the invention of stirrups.
