Initially, the Iranian authorities claimed that the cause of the collapse of the liner was a technical fault of the aircraft.
Subsequently, however, the Islamic revolutionary guard Corps (IRGC) admitted that the plane was shot down by Iranian air defense because of operator error, which took the plane for a missile.
12 July was published an additional report of the civil aviation Organization of Iran on the investigation into the crash, stating that the Ukrainian airliner was shot down due to wrong configuration of defense systems.
