KIEV. March 20. UNN. Hetman Ivan Mazepa became a symbol of Ukrainian resistance to Russia. The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko wrote on his page in Facebook, reports UNN.

“This day is born Ivan Mazepa, a figure which became crucial for Ukrainian history. He became a symbol of Ukrainian resistance to Russia; the flag of our movement to independence – the goal Mazeppa, going ahead of his time, realized already 50 years after the Pereiaslav”, – wrote P. Poroshenko.

Hetman of Zaporizhia army, the head of the Cossack state on the left Bank (1687-1704) and the entire Dnieper Ukraine (1704-1709). Prince of the Holy Roman Empire (1707-1709). After the defeat at Poltava battle during the great Northern war between the armies of Charles XII and Peter I was forced to live in the Moldavian Principality.
