KIEV. June 26. UNN. More than four years the Russian Federation has resorted to torture, psychological pressure against prisoners and illegally detained Ukrainian citizens. This is stated in the commentary of the MFA of Ukraine on the occasion of International day in support of victims of torture, with reference to the press service of the Ministry reports UNN.

“On 26 June, the Ukraine together with the international community observes the international day in support of victims of torture for more than four years in a row the Russian Federation as the aggressor state, daily commit crimes against the citizens of Ukraine – resorts to torture, psychological pressure against prisoners and illegally detained Ukrainian citizens on the territory of the Russian Federation on the temporarily occupied territories of our country”, – reads the statement of the Ministry.

The foreign Ministry added that regular monitoring of specialized international mechanisms and guidelines for unhindered access to all places of deprivation of liberty and privacy of interviews with all detainees in the temporarily occupied territories is still impossible and rejected by Russia and its occupation administration.

“The latest evidence of this was the recent visit of the UN Special Rapporteur on anti torture Nils Melzer, which the Russian Federation has denied access to places of detention in occupied Crimea… the Situation is also complicated by the fact that the Russian Federation, unlike Ukraine is not a party to the optional Protocol to the UN Convention against torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment and punishment, and consequently, the Subcommittee against torture has no ability to monitor Russia. The country is also almost ceased cooperation with special procedures of the HRC, in particular the visit to Russia by UN Special Rapporteur on anti torture has twice been cancelled”, – stated in the Ministry of foreign Affairs

The Ministry reminded the Russian Federation is a party to the Convention against torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment and called on Russia “to honour its international obligations in full”.

We will remind, the Minister of foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin urged the European partners to impose sanctions against representatives of the Russian Federation, involved in torture of citizens of Ukraine.
