Prime Minister of Slovenia Janez Jansa called for a new presidential election in Belarus in the presence of international observers. Slovenian politician stated this during a press conference after talks with U.S. Secretary of state Michael Pompeo.
“I think the only possible peaceful solution to the current crisis in Belarus. It is necessary to hold new elections in case of serious the presence of international observers,” said Jansa. His words leads TASS.
According to preliminary data of the CEC of Belarus, incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko won the election 80,08% of the votes, and Svetlana Tikhanovski – 10,09%. The opposition did not accept these results, considering them rigged. After voting on the evening of 9 August in the center of Minsk and some other cities of the country began mass protests, which escalated into clashes with law enforcement officers, who used water cannons, rubber bullets, stun grenades. According to the interior Ministry, a few days of the protests were detained about six thousand people, many of them were tortured. Hundreds of demonstrators were injured and were in hospitals.
We will remind, on August 11 the head of the diplomacy of the European Union Josep Borrell did not rule out “taking action against the persons responsible for the observed violence, arbitrary arrest and falsification of results of elections” in Belarus. According to him, “elections were neither free nor fair”.
And the foreign Ministers of the countries of the so-called triangle of Lublin (Poland, Lithuania and Ukraine) called for dialogue between the Belarusian authorities and civil society.
A number of world leaders, many of whom are also accused of an authoritarian or even dictatorial style of government, has congratulated Lukashenko on his victory in the elections, thus recognizing the legitimate voting procedure.
