More than 60 people died as a result of flooding mines in Zimbabwe – Minister
KIEV. 17 Feb. UNN. The death toll from the flooding of two mines for the extraction of gold in Mashonaland West province in Zimbabwe exceeded 60 people. This was announced on Friday, the Minister of public works and housing of the country July Moyo in a statement, reports UNN.
According to the statement, the investigation revealed that at the time of the accident at two mines worked 60-70 miners who failed to escape when water suddenly flooded the mine due to heavy rainfall.
Earlier it was reported about 38 miners working at the mine.
According to the Minister, the rescue operation continues, to the present time from the mines pumped out a large quantity of water, rescuers on Saturday will go down into the mine to search for bodies of victims.
The President of Zimbabwe Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa on Friday declared the accident a national disaster and demanded from the relevant authorities to provide assistance to the families of the victims.
As reported by UNN, in the floods and landslides in Central Indonesia, the death toll was at least 68 people.
