Fiber new material under an electron microscope

A group of researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of technology (MIT) under the guidance of Professor Gregory Rutledge has developed a new polyethylene nanofibers. In strength they are superior to Kevlar, which is used for making bulletproof vests.

When this method was used to obtain the finest gel fibers, which are pressed through the heated syringe. Thereafter the obtained filaments by electric fields formed the finished fabric.

These gel fibers have only a few hundred nanometers thick, but have ultra-high strength, the nature of which scientists have not been able to find out.

Compared with carbon and ceramic nanofibers, a new fiber is much stronger and they have a lower density. And let they are not resistant to tension, but it is very easy and inexpensive to manufacture.
