In the city of Uman, Cherkasy region, on the shore of the pond, unknown persons damaged the plaster crucifix of Jesus Christ mounted on a wooden cross.

About it reports regional management of police.

The crime occurred before the Epiphany, which Orthodox Christians celebrate on January 19. On site works investigative team, the person who committed the offence are established.

According to the fact opened criminal proceedings on signs of part 3 of article 161 of the Criminal code of Ukraine – “Violation of equality of citizens depending on their race, national origin, religious belief, disability and other grounds”. The sanction of this article prescribes punishment in the form of deprivation of liberty for a term of five to eight years.

“I heard the news about the vandalism, the desecration of the crucifix in Uman. I want to strongly condemn this act, and any such act against any religious symbol of any religion.

I hope that this provocation will not harm the peaceful coexistence of all communities in Uman,” – wrote the diplomat in Twitter.
