“Our neighbors, the Belarusians are going through difficult times. They are trying to determine the vector of its further development. And it is very difficult. It is obvious that not everyone in the country agrees with the announced preliminary election results. As you know, any legitimacy arises exclusively from the public trust. Solely from the trust. Doubt in such a scale is a direct route to violence, to conflict, public protest, which is growing. What we are now, unfortunately, and observed,” wrote Zelensky in Facebook.
He encouraged neighbors to “the maximum of tolerance and non-violence” and to “maximize public, albeit difficult, dialogue.” “Only mutual understanding between all parties is able to preserve the country’s independence and to ensure its further progress toward freedom and democracy. Otherwise, violence will increase, and this can lead to very bitter consequences,” warned Zelensky.
He also urged to adhere to “universally accepted in the civilized world of democratic standards” and try to provide the Belarusian people’s rights and freedoms in full.
“Ukraine and I am personally very interested in the fact that Belarus was truly independent and democratic country with a strong economy and stable social relations. Belarus – our closest neighbor, and therefore we are not indifferent to what is happening there and what will happen to our friends next,” concluded Zelensky.
