Arrests and torture: the UN accuses Turkey of violating human rights

In Turkey from human rights violations suffered by hundreds of thousands of citizens. The UN issued a report in which among the violations listed are not only limiting freedom of Assembly and expression, but also arbitrary arrests and torture, reports Deutsche Welle.

The report notes that the violation of the rights of hundreds of thousands of people led to the permanent extension of state of emergency in Turkey. Special powers that gave themselves the Turkish government in the framework of this provision, are used in order to suppress any criticism of the authorities.

In the report there is a speech about the brutal torture suffered by detainees. It is reported that those arrested were tortured with electric shocks, drowning and sexually abused. According to the UN, about a hundred pregnant or have just given birth women were arrested only because their husbands were suspected of terrorism.

The government in Ankara rejected the UN allegations. The Turkish foreign Ministry said that the report was “unacceptable” because it contains “distorted, biased and wrong” information.

After an unsuccessful coup attempt in Turkey in July 2016, the country imposed a state of emergency, which has since been repeatedly extended. During this period he was arrested almost 160 thousand people lost their jobs, about 152 thousand civil servants.
